Take the step toward independent language use, live online. In the B1 course, you'll speak confidently about work, plans, and experiences, understand texts, and give reasoned opinions. Everything live, in a small group with an experienced teacher, from anywhere, without the commute.
Online B1 at Phonem trains the intermediate level: telling stories coherently, justifying opinions, and mastering formal and informal situations confidently, with targeted speaking practice, writing tasks, and direct feedback.
B1 consists of two courses (B1.1 + B1.2, 12 weeks in total). B1 is the internationally recognized standard level for work, training, and many administrative procedures.
Your path through the online B1 course
The online B1 course at Phonem includes two sections: B1.1 (weeks 1–6) and B1.2 (weeks 7–12). B1 is the first level of independent language use according to CEFR. It's the most requested level for work, training, integration evidence, and administrative procedures in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
In B1.1, you'll train at the intermediate level: reporting coherently on experiences and events, formulating and justifying opinions, and discussing the future and past in German. Subjunctive II for polite requests, relative clauses, and indirect speech build your grammatical framework for independent communication.
In B1.2, you'll master more demanding daily situations: writing formal and informal letters, understanding texts from the press and daily life and talking about them, and presenting arguments in a reasoned and structured way. By the end of the online B1 course, you'll communicate fluently and confidently in most everyday situations in German.
B1 according to CEFR opens up concrete opportunities: integration exams (ÖIF, BAMF), application processes, training contracts, and numerous job situations require this level. With a completed online B1 course at Phonem, you'll have the linguistic basis to open these doors.
Small group teaching live via video (4–8 participants), direct feedback on pronunciation and grammar, real speaking exercises in every unit: that's how the online German course at Phonem works. The teacher knows where you stand, gives individual feedback, and brings you to the next language level.
With at least 70% attendance in the live units, we'll issue a Phonem certificate of attendance as a digital PDF with the B1 level according to CEFR. Our teaching builds on globally recognized CEFR standards. This way, you'll expand your German step by step and prepare for official exams when you're ready.

For learners with a completed A2 level or equivalent knowledge who want to progress to the B1 intermediate level online.
Yes. The full B1 level runs live online, with the same learning goals and materials as our on-site course in Hannover.

A Phonem certificate of attendance (digital PDF) documenting your online participation and the B1 level according to CEFR. Online courses at Phonem don't include a final exam.
Yes. The teaching follows the CEFR B1 level and builds the language skills you need for external exams like the Goethe-Zertifikat B1, telc Deutsch B1, ÖSD B1, or the ÖIF integration exam. Exams are conducted by independent institutes. Phonem prepares you thoroughly for the exam.
