The A1 German course at Phonem is your entry into the German language. It's designed for beginners without any prior knowledge who want to learn German from scratch. You'll learn the most important words, simple sentences, and your first conversations for daily life, work, and living in Hannover.

Placement test

The course follows the Common European Framework of Reference and is structured into A1.1 and A1.2. If you don't have any German knowledge, you'll start with A1.1. Step by step, you'll practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It's especially important to us that you start speaking from the very beginning and feel more confident.

In small groups with a clear structure, you'll have enough space to practice. This allows you to ask questions and start at a calm pace.

Learning goals

What do you learn in the A1 German course?

Your path

Your Path Through A1

A1 is your first solid step into German. You won't learn everything at once, but in small, clear units. This keeps the start manageable and motivating.

Many learners feel overwhelmed by vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation at the beginning. Different accents and a new pace in daily life are normal. You'll get used to it over time.

Motivation goes up and down. Almost everyone knows that feeling. Regular lessons, short practice at home, and lots of speaking in the course will help you stay on track.

At Phonem, you'll get structure, feedback, and realistic goals according to the Common European Framework of Reference at level A1. You'll know exactly what you'll achieve step by step in A1.1 and A1.2.

  1. You'll start with pronunciation, greetings, and the most important words for daily life and the classroom. You'll practice simple sentences in the present tense, listen to short dialogues, and answer in small steps. Reading and writing stay short and clear, such as forms or a simple message. This way, you'll gain confidence before the sentences get longer.

  2. You'll speak longer and understand more in daily situations. You'll expand your vocabulary for work, leisure, and appointments and solidify central structures. Listening and speaking will become more fluid, even if different pronunciations sound new. When writing, you'll connect short texts with what you've practiced in the course. By the end, you'll be on your way to completing the full A1 level.
