A1CEFR level

Start with no prior knowledge. Learn live online with a teacher from Hannover. The online A1 course at Phonem is for absolute beginners. No German required: everything starts from zero. You'll learn your first words, sentences, and daily situations in a small group, comfortably from home, without the commute, with real live teaching instead of pre-recorded videos.

Placement test

In the online A1 course, you'll lay the foundation: pronunciation, simple sentences, introducing yourself, shopping, and asking for directions. Direct correction by the teacher, plenty of speaking time, and small groups make the difference compared to app learning and solo courses.

A1 consists of two courses (A1.1 + A1.2, 12 weeks in total). After A1, you'll be ready for A2, online or on-site in Hannover.

Your path

Your path through the online A1 course

The online A1 course at Phonem is divided into two sections: A1.1 (weeks 1–6) and A1.2 (weeks 7–12). Together they form the complete beginner level A1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), with live structured teaching and an experienced teacher from Hannover.

In A1.1, you'll lay the linguistic foundation: pronunciation, numbers, colors, introducing yourself, greeting someone, and mastering simple daily situations in German. The lessons guide you step by step from zero to basic A1.1 communication. You'll use German from the very beginning, with direct feedback in every unit.

A1.2 deepens and expands: You'll learn to talk about habits and preferences, read and write simple texts, go shopping, and move confidently in familiar situations. By the end of A1.2, you'll communicate at CEFR A1 level, the result of twelve weeks of structured online German learning.

At A1 level according to CEFR, you can understand and use familiar words and basic sentences, communicate in a simple way, and read and write short texts. This is the basis for every further step: A2, B1, and beyond, continuing online or on-site in Hannover.

What sets the Phonem online course apart from apps and video courses: you'll learn live, in a small group of 4–8 people, with a teacher who answers your questions, corrects errors immediately, and adapts the pace to the group. Real teaching that's flexible on timing, independent of location, and without the commute.

Those who attend at least 70% of the live teaching units will receive a Phonem certificate of attendance as a digital PDF. It documents your online participation and the A1 level according to CEFR. The teaching follows the Common European Framework of Reference, a globally used standard. This way, you'll improve your German step by step and build a solid foundation for official German exams.
